Honouring the Spirit of Dedan Kimathi
A Global Stage Tribute to a Kenyan Hero
As we approach the 105th birthday of the legendary Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, Kenya’s symbol of resistance and courage, the world once again turns its spotlight on his indomitable spirit through the arts.
The British Council Kenya, in partnership with The Africa Centre, Bradford African Festival, and Theatre in the Mill, presents “The Trial of Dedan Kimathi” — a groundbreaking tripartite stage production connecting Nairobi, London, and Bradford in real time. This first-of-its-kind performance beautifully reimagines Kimathi’s story, reminding us that his defiant voice still echoes through Kenya’s history and beyond.

Sponsored by @britishcouncil and presented as part of the British Council’s UK/Kenya Season 2025, this event celebrates creativity, history, and identity through the arts — perfectly aligning with the ongoing Black History Month celebrations worldwide.
As we commemorate Kimathi’s life and the enduring legacy of the Mau Mau movement, let us also reflect on the power of art as a bridge between generations and nations. Through theatre, music, and storytelling, we honour those who fought for freedom and dignity, ensuring their voices continue to inspire new movements for justice and equality.
Let us all join together from Kenya to the UK and across the world to celebrate our shared history, creativity, and cultural pride.
